Mother's Day Lovin'

We had a nice, beautiful day today in which to enjoy the outdoors. I keep on getting reminded lately on how short life is and how truly fleeting material things are.

There are few things in life that last, and fewer things that really matter at all when we are old enough to look back. Here are a few that are worth it; the true blessings in my life who are worthy of much time and effort! I only hope and pray that I do well with them as their mother.

My Mom is my inspiration. [As cheesy as that sounds!] She is proof of how amazing God's grace is!

I LOVE YOU MOM!

Here are some late-night, random thoughts about my Mom.

My Mom was born and raised in California. She worked with Mexicans in orchards harvesting (fruit, almonds?) as a child/teenager. They called her "Blue Eyes." In Spanish.

She was saved at age 16 and radically changed. She is an example of grace and forgiveness, no matter what. It is such a powerful example for my life and one I am truly thankful for.

I want to be a good mom. I believe that truly comes from how I was raised.

I want my kids to have fun, because I had a fun childhood. It may have not been overly safe... but it was sure fun!

My Mom loves to work. I learned to enjoy work from an early age. Hard, sweaty, back-breaking work. I am not sure how she taught us that [though a few things come to mind!], but am determined to pass a good work ethic on to my kids.

I am so proud of my Mom and thankful for her example in my life. I hope my kids can look back on their childhood the way I can look back on mine! Not that it was perfect-- because raising a family is a learning process. I believe it is often the mistakes and how we respond to them that shape us and give us character.

Happy Mother's Day to all my mommy friends out there!

A Stroller Ride and a Wish.

Maycee (3) finally convinced Dax (21 months) to get in a small stroller at Grandma's house. She buckled him and gave him a ride.

I said, "That's a nice baby you have in there!"

She said so cutely in her sweet low voice, "Yeah, but I wish it was a girl baby."

You think she wants a sister? ;)

I don't really blame her. I am hoping that she gets a sister too... but I just hope it won't be too disappointing for her if this little one is another boy!

We will find out in just 13 [short] weeks!

One of THOSE Days.

There are days that go something like this.

The peaceful days. The sunny days. The sweet-moment-filled days where everybody gets along and eats their lunches without complaining. The house is clean and there are fresh flowers on the table.

And then there are days that go more like this.

Thanks to my nephew, Briggs for the photo op.
[He may not be mine, but he was definitely under my care at this time!]

Holy cow, why is my kid running around naked?

Where are the other two?

Why am I yelling so much?

HEY GET OVER HERE RIGHT NOW AND PUT YOUR PANTS ON!

Or there is this. Gravel up the nose. Twenty minutes later, spaghetti up the face and smeared into hair.

And then I feel like curling up on the couch and just...

Our cat, Dwight. Isn't he precious. [That is sarcastic. I'm very jealous.]
So anyways, we had a day more like the latter!

I won't go into details. Except for this:

I hand-grated an entire block (1 Cup) of butter for a scrumptious Beef Pot Pie Crust. I put a lot of effort into this pot pie, because I was determined to make a good meal for my husband who would be home in time to let me go to my workout class tonight.

Two Things.

1) Husband didn't come home in time for my fitness class. In fact, he will not be home until midnight... so my sweet night out this week wasn't meant to be.

2) The kids were thrilled about the Pot Pie until they cut into it and realized that it wasn't an apple pie. I tried to prepare them for this. I told them while it was in the oven that it was steak and vegetables inside, not apples. Not cinnamon. They just wouldn't believe me. When they finally realized that I was serious, they were utterly disappointed that we were not having apple pie for dinner.

The only soul who did enjoy this pot pie -- besides myself-- was my dog. He smelled the t-bone steak remnants in the garbage while we were outside, and tore an entire garbage bag apart. All 110 pounds of him really can do some destruction in a hurry. I almost killed him.

But I was too busy trying to get the berry stains, dirty diapers, steak juices, and banana peels off my jute rug.

One of those days!

In the words of one of my Dr. Suess books: "Today is gone, today was fun. Tomorrow is another one." (And it is going to be better than today!)

Horsin' Around

Some adorable photos from my iPhone roll from this evening:

Lovely girl and a lovely horse!

Walk On

It is a gloomy, rainy day today.

But it smells fabulous outside! Grass is turning green and trees are budding leaves. It is a beautiful time of the year for a walk down to our coulee.

Maycee babbled non-stop about the flowers, or lack of flowers, and the beautiful ones that she managed to find. Thor brought along a bungee strap with hooks. He babbled the entire time about stuff he was going to hook with it.

Dax is almost big enough to walk down the hill by himself!

"Hey, these powers [flowers] aren't too bad!" says Maycee, who is always looking for some flowers to pick!

"I'm gonna hook your camera!" says Thor.

Admiring the water (and Thor is still hooking stuff with his bungee strap.)
Back up the hill! Three in a row :)

Taming the Tiger.

Preface: Please bear with me. This blogpost is about tiger sharks, dirty couches, defiant children, and there is even a little bit of ebonics thrown in there.

I read in a book recently that sand tiger sharks are born fighters. While still in the womb, the embryos fight each other. Most of the pups are cannibalized before they are ever born.

[Yes, it was a children's book about sharks from the library. This is about the scope of my reading literature these days!]

Now, I am not saying that my kids are sharks. But there are some similarities... let me explain!

The Bible says we are born with a nature to sin- an inward motivation to sin. We don't learn to sin; rather, it comes naturally to us since birth. This is explained well in John 3, and it also explains the popular phrase of being "born again."

"Jesus answered him: Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3

So, like the sharks are born with sharkish nature to kill, us humans are born with the human nature to sin.

Moms all know that we don't have to teach a child to sin. We do not teach them to say no, to want to be defiant, or to talk back to us. It is a natural process of growing up. It is our responsibility to teach our children, to disciple them; to shape our kids into the kind of adults we want them to be.

Here's what happened this morning. I put a new blanket on my poor, poor couch. This couch has endured a lot over the last 5 years. It could really use a professional cleaning. Instead, it is getting a large cozy blanket to mask the wear-and-tear it has been dealt!

Believe me. It's dirty under there.

Now, four-year-old Thor began using a tow truck toy to pull the waffled blanket threading apart, resulting in long strings of thread from the blanket. Essentially, he was pulling the blanket apart. I scolded him and told him there was no way he needed to ruin a good blanket! He showed defiance instead of remorse, so I sent him up to his room.

Like a brave, gallient knight, he marched up the stairs defiantly proclaiming, "and I will continue to ruin things as long as you are mean to me!"

Yeah. What those pictures say. Oh. No. You. Did. N't.  thought I, as I sprung from the living room rug to follow him up the stairs. I do believe he was beginning to regret the words that came from his mouth.

{and how often do we as adults regret the things our untamed tounge says!}

Needless to say, the boy got a long talking to. He got sent to bed at 10:30 a.m. He skipped lunch. He will be in bed until his normal nap time is over. He is bummed and disappointed. But hopefully, he will learn something out of this. But really... can't we all?

James 3

[which ironically, I was just reading last night!]

Taming the Tongue

3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.  Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.  So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,  but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.  From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Wisdom from Above

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.  This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.  For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.  But rthe wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Sew-a-Thon

My dear friend was only two days away from having her precious baby, and she had picked out some fabrics for blankets. She is a really good friend, and I was really excited for this lil baby!

I think I did some "nesting" for her! I spent my free time for a couple days with my serger. The results were squishy, soft, and ready for a sweet little baby to snuggle in!

Ooga Booga (bamboo velour) backed with soft yellow flannel-- a perfect swaddling blanket!

Bubblegum Pink Bamboo Velour backed with Orange-- to die for!
Squishy soft. I made this after I heard the announcement-- a GIRL!

The stack of blankets and burp cloths!

Big sister got a giant blanket for her bed.
Big brother got a Curious George blanket-- though I don't think I got a picture of it!

My kids sat on the couch and snuggled kittens the whole time I sewed. [JOKING. If only.]

My love for organic bamboo fabrics and soft cotton knits only got stronger. They are the softest things known to mankind.
